  • Tulsa Police Officer J. Thurman Spybuck died in the line of duty in 1971. The Tulsa Police Honor Guard was born from his death. Today, there are thirty members who proudly don on the traditional Honor Guard uniform. These men and women have stood for hours in 100 degree heat waves wearing the traditional long sleeve shirt. They have stood at attention in subfreezing temperatures without a jacket.  They are a mixture of Patrol Officers, Detectives, Supervisors, and Specialty Units. Who, time after time show up for a funeral or special event with little or no sleep. And if you dare to ask me , "Why do I do it" Be sure and look closely into my eyes. You will see a tear that will not fall. And you will hear me say. "There is no greater honor than to lay to rest one of your own." Carl Goforth
